In the heart of the Crete Senesi

The splendid Crete Senesi are a very unique hilly area, southeast of Siena, whose clay composition is due to their ancient nature as a marine basin, in which sand and mud accumulated. The municipalities of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme, and San Giovanni d'Asso are part of this area.

The area was submerged by the sea until about a million years ago. After the waters receded, the irregular deposits of layers of clay and sand came to light with their numerous fossils of various kinds of mollusks. The erosion process of these soils led to the formation of numerous inlets, called "calanchi," and "biancane," small dome-shaped hills, on which, as a result of exposure to the sun, sodium sulfate emerged, giving them a characteristic light color. These long natural upheavals have made the landscape of the Crete one of the most unique and fascinating scenarios in Tuscany.

The main feature of the Crete is therefore a nature that is still predominant and the protagonist of the environment, made up of very unusual colors, such as the gray of the clay and the yellow of the sulfate. Since the Middle Ages, this area was collectively known as the Desert of Accona.
